Original writing: Write an email to a colleague at the office, asking her if you can borrow her office for an hour for an important meeting. Her office is nicer and more private than yours. You do not know this colleague well, so you want to make your request formal and polite.


Good morning, Mrs. Genn.

I have an important meeting with investors next week to discuss the project X.
There will be three managers and two directors attending the meeting. I would like to ask to borrow your office for an hour, since it can accommodate everyone and it is equipped with the multimedia resources. 
I appreciate your attention and I wait for a response.

Change the formality of the original: Rewrite the same email, but now imagining that the two of you are good friends who often socialize together outside of work.

Change the tone of the original: Now imagine that this coworker has been uncooperative in the past, and you have had many disagreements with her. You have asked her once about her office, and she has not answered your email. Write a second email, still polite, but with a more insistent tone about your request.

Last Monday I submitted a request to borrow your office for an important meeting about the project X. Directors and Managers from CompanyY will be attending and it would be really appreciative if we could use your office since it has a bigger meeting table, able to accomodate all the guests.

Writing Course - Week 2 - Tone

Where I live
- tones: Optimistic, sentimental and excited

I live in a very nice apartment! The living room with large windows and long curtain panels that make the environment so comfy and warm. One of my favorite areas is the porch, that I put a lot of effort to make it nice and beautiful. It fills my heart of joy to sit out there in a warm summer night.

Week 1 - Writing Course

I mostly write in English when I am working, sending e-mails to my clients and texting my boss. I am used to sending work e-mails in my native language, Portuguese, but I had faced moments when I use words that are very common and acceptable in my native language, but in the English grammar or/and culture might sound different or even rude comparing of what I really want to say.

I used to write poems and songs when I was a teenager, but today, writing is not one of my passions or hobbies, besides that, I have to write a lot and well in my career.

I am really looking forward to improving my business writing with this course. I can feel frustrated sometimes by not getting to my writings expectation in English as much I used to get in Portuguese. And now, living in the USA and looking for a better job position, I definitely need to develop my writing skills.
